Santa Margarita Lake

February 15, 2023

Today, another excursion into unknown territory as we headed to Santa Margarita Lake. The Lake is a reservoir created by the Salinas Dam constructed in 1941. We drove through the town of Santa Margarita to Pozo Rd and then to the Lake. There aren’t many trails in the area that weren’t too muddy. We chose Rocky’s Trail which headed out on the west side of the Lake. The trail was a slight uphill climb that gave us views of the lake and birds enjoying their swim. The two mile one way trail peaks at the top of a hill with a obscured view of the dam. It’s an easy trail with nice views of the lake, oaks growing on the hillside and a smattering of wildflowers.

Last year we were in the area to hike the Rinconada Trail in the Los Padres National Forest. We assumed it would be closed due to storm damage. We drove to the trailhead just to check. We discovered it was open. Oh well, maybe next year. We once again stopped for a meal at The Porch in Santa Margarita and then headed back.
